Following the Jan. 12, 2010, earthquake, CIDA expanded its role in Haiti to work closely with numerous international and Canadian partners in meeting the needs for humanitarian assistance and to contribute to the country's early recovery, reconstruction and long- term development and ensure that assistance was delivered effectively.
Canada responded quickly. Through $150.15 million in humanitarian assistance, Canada helped provide disaster-stricken Haitians with emergency medical services, emergency supplies, water and sanitation, and shelters. In March 2010, Canada also committed $400 million over two years for the recovery and reconstruction of Haiti. This amount is in addition to Canada's $555 million longer-term development assistance in Haiti for 2006-2011.
Canada is working with the Government of Haiti, its Canadian partners, and its international counterparts to assist the most vulnerable and to rebuild Haiti, in accordance with the Action Plan for National Recovery and Development of Haiti (PDF version, 1.5 KB, 57 pages).
