International Development Week 2012

February 4, 2012

Every year, during the first week of February, CIDA joins its development partners to celebrate International Development Week (IDW).

This week-long event provides a unique opportunity for Canadian organizations and individuals to share their successes and achievements in international development.

During IDW, I would like to invite all Canadians to join in this celebration by attending a number of events taking place across the country.

This year, IDW focuses on the empowerment of women and girls, particularly their participation in a country's sustainable economic growth. Studies have shown that investing in women is one of the best ways to reduce poverty and help the economy grow. When women have greater control over household resources, there is greater investment in the well-being of their children and improved quality of life for their families. When women are empowered, they become agents of change, making decisions that positively shape their families, communities, and countries.

Planned IDW activities and events will explore issues of food security as well as of maternal, newborn, and child health. Canada's work has made a meaningful difference in the lives of women and girls living in poverty, and we are proud to share their stories.
